Sheds and Garages

GARDEN SHEDS AND OUTHOUSES

DOORS – Fit good quality hinges, hasps and close shackled padlocks to the door. The hinges and hasps should be held in place with dome headed bolts to prevent tampering.

WINDOWS – Fit window grilles, or heavy wire mesh internally to the shed or outhouse. Re-inforced glass is a good alternative. If the windows open, a window lock should be used. Consider using curtains or old netting to prevent a thief seeing what’s inside. Where possible avoid having a window at the rear of the shed where it is not normally visible.
Remember, in addition to the contents being stolen, tools could be used to force entry to your home.

Don’t leave items against a wall allowing a thief to use it as a step, permitting access to a high open window, or flat roof.

GARAGE SECURITY
Few people give serious consideration to garage security, despite the fact that they can contain many thousands of pounds worth of equipment, over and above a car. If you look at your garage contents and place a value on the items and the inconvenience it would cause if they went missing, I think you would have a shock.
Garages can be attached to the house and even have an entrance to the house from within. If they do have a door into the house then you must place great emphasis on your garage security. A person who gains entry to your garage can work away unseen at the entrance to your home.
The first piece of advice is obvious. Do not leave your garage door open when you leave the house. Passersby can see in and see your possessions. Someone could also enter your garage and pull the door main door closed behind them allowing them time to work at the internal door.

If your garage has a window then secure it with heavy wire mesh grille from within. Consider fitting an old piece of netting on the inside preventing people looking in.

If you can enter your house from the garage then fit an extra bolt to the inside of the garage door which cannot be tampered with from outside.

Your garage might be separate from the house with an extra door at the side. Give this door extra attention. They are often neglected when it comes to security. Fit good locks and ensure the door frame and striking plate is up to standard.

You can offer some protection to your vehicle and garage by placing a deep layer of stone chips around the actual slabs that the car drives on and around the garage. The deeper the layer the better the sound. It is amazing how much sound will travel through the ground to your home and you can hear someone outside walking around your home.
