MOTORCYCLE SECURITY ADVICE
Motorcycle theft constitutes a substantial part of motor insurance claims. Over a third of insurance claims involving motorcycles are to cover theft. That amounts to over £70 million pounds throughout Britain. Its no wonder premiums are on the increase! Of all the motorcycles in Britain less than half are fitted with security devices. It’s no wonder they are easy targets. Wheel one away, strip it down, sell the parts. That’s how easy some motorcycle owners make it for the thief.
If your motorcycle went missing tomorrow would you be able to say with a clear conscience that you took reasonable precaution against theft. Here are some simple tips to help prevent your motorcycle go missing.

  • Always use the steering lock.
  • At night park your motorcycle in a well lit area.
  • During the day park in a busy area where there are plenty of people about to deter the potential thief.
  • Don’t park in the same place every day. Vary your parking space.
  • If your work or town has a custom built motorcycle park use it, especially of it has fixtures on which to secure your motorcycle. Use a high tension steel cable or chain and a substantial padlock to secure your motorcycle. `U` locks through the rear wheel are also effective.
  • Place helmets inside a lockable top box and remove valuables from the panniers and top box.

You may consider having many of the motorcycles parts etched with your Registration Number, electronically tagged using a `Data Tag` system, or marked using such items as the `Alpha Scientific`, ALPHA-DOT system, available through many good hardware stores or motorcycle dealers.

Don’t forget to check your Insurance Policy. Not all Insurance Companies hand out too willingly, especially if they discover that you have been negligent in the security of your vehicle.

For further advice consider contacting your local Police Crime Prevention Officer, or any of the companies listed in the contacts page.
